Teaching Real-World Cyber Security at UNSW Business
Cyber Security Education | 3 Oct 2023
The gap between theoretical cybersecurity instruction and practical application in industry remains significant. A new subject, INFS5922, addresses this disconnect through real-world case studies and hands-on learning at UNSW Business School.
Course Overview
INFS5922 represents a collaborative offering between the Australian Graduate School of Management (AGSM) and UNSW Business. Rather than focusing solely on established frameworks, the curriculum emphasizes “facing actual cybersecurity problems, working in groups, simulating challenges, and learning from experienced cybersecurity pros.”
Pedagogical Approach
The program transcends conventional classroom instruction by requiring students to engage with genuine cybersecurity challenges, develop critical thinking capabilities, and apply problem-solving methodologies reflective of workplace demands.
Course Leadership and Guest Experts
Dr. Pranit Anand leads the subject at UNSW Business, with co-convenorship from Matt O’Kane. Guest speakers contributing real-world perspectives include:
- Denny Wan (Reasonable Security Institute)
- Jim Boughton (finance sector cybersecurity and technology)
- Lauren Veenstra (heavy industrial sector cybersecurity and technology)
